Physical Education Update

Winter in Rohan Woods School Physical Education and Athletics.

Floor Hockey season is here!  Winter at Rohan Woods brings several team sports, along with fitness training to our indoor curriculum. We look forward to floor hockey, basketball, and volleyball to teach us about each student's potential in competitive play. The common thread for these sports is success. This requires individual skill combined with teamwork. Students spend a good deal of class time developing individual skills while learning to assess themselves and determine how to continue to progress. We record skill data (in fraction and percentage form) to analyze strengths and areas to improve. With this information, students can appreciate the components that each individual contributes to produce a team effort. In fitness training, we'll concentrate on upper body and core strength by playing games that allow for success in all levels of fitness. Students are focusing on strong footwork and proper hip turns to give them good mobility for indoor sports.

Younger students experience a variation of this learning style. Our Pre-kindergarten through first graders acquire new skills and then apply those skills to exciting scenarios. For example, when a JK student learns to dribble a hockey puck with a stick, they are then challenged to dribble around “volcanoes” while avoiding “hot lava”.  Like a good book, the activity engages the child in a true moment of drama. While this game is silly and fun, it introduces the student to performing in a dramatic moment. This prelude to competition leads a student to discover that success in sports is fun and open to everyone.

Running Club: We are back in motion! All 1st- 6th graders are invited to join us on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (7:25- 7:45am) for a quick wake-up run and stretch to get us going for the day. Run a lap or a mile, it's up to you!

NEWS: Polar Bear Run: Thanks to all polar bears who joined us for the first Polar Bear Runs of the season! The cold, blowing snow did not stop our group from running laps, making snow angels and pulling friends in sleds. Thanks, Polar Bears for a fun morning!

Be ready for the next snowy run of the season. If there's good, fluffy snow on a Tuesday or Thursday, bring your snow gear for an outdoor run. We'll jog through the drifts and have snow angel races. Let it snow!

Marathon Day, November 10th! Congratulations to RWS for meeting the challenge of running a Marathon in under 20 Minutes. The challenge was to combine mileage and complete 26.2 miles in a single morning. With the temperature hovering around 39 degrees, our runners hit the field determined to reach their goal. Several parents and two teachers jumped in the event and together Running Club members logged 37.6 miles in 18 minutes! That's 301 laps around the field. Congratulations to all for setting a new school record.

Lunch League:  Our intramural program is lead by sixth grade captains and all third-sixth graders are invited to play during recess. Captains select teams, manage players and lead the team on the field. Players enjoy the camaraderie of students in other grades as they learn the fine arts of sportsmanship, leadership and competition. We'll play soccer, flag football, team handball, floor hockey, basketball, volleyball and baseball.

Currently: Teams are in floor hockey season.  Congratulations to team handball champions "The Beasts". A special congratulations to team captains Lucy and Jake on their 15-9 victory!

Athletics (grades 3-6):  Children who would like to participate are encouraged to give their best in competition, guided by sportsmanship and the love of play. We learn how to accept winning and losing and to appreciate the joy of an afternoon with friends and family cheering us on!
