Art Class Update

During the next month the Juniors and Seniors will be introduced to the art of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. They will view works-of-art by Monet, Seurat, Renoir, Cassatt, Degas and Van Gogh. With careful observation they will explore and discuss what they like about the Impressionistic style.

First Graders completed their unit on Egypt and will journey to China to learn the traditions and customs associated with Chinese New Year. They will construct very large Dragons that will be part of our Chinese New Year Parade on Thursday, February 2 at 2:15. The classes are encouraged to wear RED that day (RED symbolizes good luck) and be prepared for a festive celebration!

Second grade will begin their unit on winter landscapes and observe the variety of trees outside the large art room windows. Third Graders are beginning a unit focusing on three-dimensional art. Manipulating clay, the Third Grade will sculpt Oaxacan style animals.

Fourth and Fifth graders are continuing their Hopi Kachina unit and are looking forward to presenting their stories to the students and faculty at Rohan Woods. Sixth grade will complete their Egyptian unit and are anxious to display their Death Masks for everyone to enjoy!

Art Curriculum

The art program at Rohan Woods School has a comprehensive approach. Students are exposed to all facets of art which include not only studio production but art history, art criticism and aesthetics. At an early age students come to understand that to create their own art they need to have an understanding and knowledge of other artists and cultures. Students are exposed to many mediums throughout the year. Drawing, painting, fiber art, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics are part of the art program. Research and writing are a part of the program as well. Skill building and specific instruction in technique along with multiple opportunities to practice the skills, allow students to create wonderful works of art.
