We had another great week at Rohan Woods. In Reading, we read our first decodable book, The Nap. In this story, we worked on blending sounds together. We also reviewed the sight word, the. You can read your child’s story at home together, and have him/her point out the word the to you. Other skills you can reinforce at home include recalling information and looking closely at details in the pictures of the story. This week, the class also practiced writing the letter /d/ and identifying its sound.
Next week, we will begin sending home individual sight word flash cards in a Ziploc bag. You will find this bag in your child’s parent pouch. We will typically introduce and work on one or two new words each week. As you see new words in your child’s bag, you may take them out and keep them at home to review each night. In addition, we will introduce the /o/ sound next week. We will read a poem that focuses on the short “o” vowel sound, utilizing this poem as a tool to reinforce
this sound throughout the week. In the Red, White, and Blue reading unit, the seniors will be reading a special story next week, called Hats Off for the Fourth of July. We will work on recalling details and the main idea in this story that is about a parade for the Fourth of July.
In Language Arts and Social Studies, the children discussed different places the U.S. flag can be found. We also continued to focus on punctuation marks at the end of sentences and capital letters at the beginning of sentences.
In Math, the children are enjoying their exploration with patterns. We have made patterns during calendar time and even when working with paint! The senior kindergarteners have worked on paper/pencil activities focusing on number recognition and counting. The students have also worked on the math skill, sorting, by sorting buttons by color, button holes, and shape.
