Senior Kindergarteners Had an Awesome Week!

We had another great week at Rohan Woods.  In Reading, we read our first decodable book, The Nap.  In this story, we worked on blending sounds together. We also reviewed the sight word, the.  You can read your child’s story at home together, and have him/her point out the word the to you.  Other skills you can reinforce at home include recalling information and looking closely at details in the pictures of the story.  This week, the class also practiced writing the letter /d/ and identifying its sound.

Next week, we will begin sending home individual sight word flash cards in a Ziploc bag.  You will find this bag in your child’s parent pouch.  We will typically introduce and work on one or two new words each week.  As you see new words in your child’s bag, you may take them out and keep them at home to review each night.  In addition, we will introduce the /o/ sound next week.   We will read a poem that focuses on the short “o” vowel sound, utilizing this poem as a tool to reinforce this sound throughout the week.   In the Red, White, and Blue reading unit, the seniors will be reading a special story next week, called Hats Off for the Fourth of July.  We will work on recalling details and the main idea in this story that is about a parade for the Fourth of July.

In Language Arts and Social Studies, the children discussed different places the U.S. flag can be found.  We also continued to focus on punctuation marks at the end of sentences and capital letters at the beginning of sentences.

In Math, the children are enjoying their exploration with patterns.  We have made patterns during calendar time and even when working with paint!  The senior kindergarteners have worked on paper/pencil activities focusing on number recognition and counting.  The students have also  worked on the math skill, sorting, by sorting buttons by color, button holes, and shape.

Senior Kindergarten Curriculum

The Senior Kindergarten program builds on the foundation laid in the Early Childhood and Pre-Kindergarten programs and enhanced in Junior Kindergarten. Love of learning and respect for education are emphasized in all academic areas. Understanding that all children do not learn in the same way, we teach for understanding through auditory, visual and kinesthetic activities. The program is designed to promote an atmosphere in which each person strives for individual achievement, assumes responsibility for his or her actions, understands and respects the dignity of classmates and realizes the need for civility in our society. We incorporate active and interactive learning and make use of natural connections between subject areas to help students construct meaning from concepts. Our Social Studies curriculum focuses on students identifying and understanding increasingly larger conceptual stages such as self-knowledge, understanding of group dynamics, and personal responsibility as a community member.
