We had another great week in Second Grade! We learned routines, developed expectations, and worked together to bring out the best in each other.
Literacy centers are used as a means to practice and enhance various skills while small group instruction is happening during reading. These 8 centers provide opportunities for all students to work at their level while continuing their understanding of a specific skill we are working on during the week. We focused on following the routine of centers, developing our own expectations while working at a center, and managing our time efficiently. The extra time put into the beginning of the year makes for a happy and smooth transition the rest of the year. The students enjoy working at centers and have even commented on how much they love the games and activities they can choose.
Our focus in math this week was on counting money, both counting coins and dollar amounts. We
played Money Exchange Game using one dollar bills, ten dollar bills, and hundred dollar bills. Although the money is not the real thing, it didn’t stop the students from thinking about what they would buy with all of that money. While playing the game, the students roll a die to determine the number of one dollar bills they acquire from the bank. When they have enough one dollar bills to exchange for a ten dollar bill, they do so. The goal of the game is to continue exchanging money until they finally exchange for a one hundred dollar bill. This was sent home as a homework assignment and ended up being so much fun, the parents requested it come home again. This is a great way to reinforce money skills while having so much fun!
Communities were our theme in social studies this week. We talked about the four different types of communities: urban, suburban, town, and rural. Communities are places where people work, play, and live. Through our discussions we determined what types of places make up these communities and what do we have in our very own community. The students enjoyed trying to create a list of all the businesses, schools, grocery stores, etc., that make up the place where they live. We will later have an opportunity to see how people in a community play a key role by the profession they hold.
