Pre-Kindergarten (PK) Weekly Update

Thank you to all the Dad’s that spent the morning with us!  It was wonderful eating donuts, playing basketball, and showing you our favorite activites in the classroom.  We hope you enjoyed the song we prepared just for you! We love our Dad’s!!

We have begun learning about measurement.  What is length?  Why do we measure?  How do we measure?  How do we weigh?  We have done several fun activities measuring with our “hand ruler”.  We have also explored with a scale to see how to balance and what objects are heavier and lighter.

Continuing our study of mammals, we discovered that whales and dolphins are not fish even though they swim in water!  They are mammals!  They have a breathing hole at the top of their head and give birth to babies.  The blue whale is the largest mammal that has ever lived.

Please have your child send in 100 items on Monday for the 100th day of school celebration.  This can be anything you can think of such as cereal, cotton balls, noodles, etc.  We will display them and count them.  This will be a fun day!

Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum

The full day or part time Pre-Kindergarten Program, built on a developmentally appropriate curriculum, welcomes children into the Rohan Woods School environment. Children have the advantage of experiencing all the resources that an established academic institution has to offer and yet are nurtured in their own secure space. The Program emphasizes the milestones that emerge over time, forming building blocks for growth and continued learning. Children are encouraged to explore and express their ideas in an environment that is supportive and nurturing.

The Pre-Kindergarten curriculum is comprised of a balance of Center Time to address academic growth through exploration and discovery; Play, focusing on language development and the opportunity to navigate their social world; and Exposure to Specialty Instruction, such as Spanish, physical education and music/movement.

During Center Time, the children gain experiences within the walls of their classroom. Students are exposed to pre-reading skills, math concepts, language development, sensory integration, fine and gross motor skills, along with cognitive development and socialization skills. The children will also have regular opportunities to interact with other Rohan Woods students and faculty.

The Pre-Kindergarten Program is a child’s first exposure to a school setting in which they are a part of a greater community. Whether in their small and structured classroom, with a specialist teacher, or outside exploring the larger world, Rohan Woods three-year olds will begin their nine-year journey with us in a safe and challenging environment. Our children will quickly learn that they are encouraged to explore, ask questions and discover, that they are being prepared to become life-long learners, and that they are a cherished part of the Rohan Woods family.
