Junior Kindergarten (JK) Weekly Update

Can you believe the weather this week?  The JK penguins enjoyed the warm temperatures but the real penguins sure would not!  This week, we learned all about penguins.  We started last week with our penguin party with the EC class.  The party was a blast!  I hope you enjoy the pictures.  We continued this week with making penguin books and using our “kid spelling” to write and draw things that start with P.  We also read many books about these amazing animals.  Did you know there are 17 different kinds of penguins?

This week we read The Lonely Prince in Language Arts.  This story is about a prince who has every toy in the world that money can buy but is still not happy.  Not even a hot-air balloon, lion in a cage or battalion of soldiers can cheer him up.  Finally, he meets the gardener’s son and his pet rabbit.  They figure out to play with the rabbit together which puts a smile on the prince’s face.  The Juniors really seemed captivated by this story, making predictions along the way of how to cheer up the prince.  We also continue to discuss compound words and clapping syllables.  We looked at different foods and animals and clapped the syllables. Can you think of an animal that has four syllables?  We can!

We have been focusing on numbers greater than 20 this week.  Our practice of counting by 10s has really come in handy.  We are able to quickly count the ten-frames by 10s and then count up by ones to complete the number.  Of course, a lot of excitement about counting this week is because of the 100th day of school coming on Monday.  We will be doing different activities with a 100s chart to help us recognize numbers 1-100.

Speaking of the 100th day, please make sure to send in your goodies for the 100th day trail mix on Monday.  Count out 100 pieces of a snack item and put them in a Ziploc bag.  Include a copy of the ingredient label so we can check for allergies and dietary needs.

Also, remember to send in one shoebox for our Valentine’s Day project.  We need all shoeboxes by Friday, February 10.

Creating Valentine’s is a great time for your child to practice writing not only their own name, but their friends’ names as well.  Remember to include all 8 of our classmates.  We will be passing these out during the Valentine’s Day party on Tuesday, the 14th at 2:00.

Have a great weekend!

Junior Kindergarten Curriculum

The Junior Kindergarten program emphasizes a developmental approach to learning. We focus on pre-reading and pre-math activities, which are addressed through our accelerated curriculum. Our small class size and low teacher-pupil ratio allows each child to progress at his or her own pace. Special activities include a language based reading and writing program, creative and developmental art activities, and a Social Studies curriculum that allows the children to explore and discover their world.

We also provide many opportunities for children to engage in creative play and stress social skills necessary for success in cooperative learning activities. The Junior Kindergarten curriculum builds on our Early Childhood and Pre-Kindergarten curriculums and flows into the Senior Kindergarten program, providing the child with a comprehensive four-year early childhood education. Our Junior Kindergarten students will be enthusiastic and engaged learners, who are positive about school, who demonstrate high self-esteem and who possess balanced and strong self-concepts.
