Fifth Graders Prepare To Be Leaders!

The students are adapting well to the procedures and work in fifth grade.  They had an excellent level of concentration this week, working hard to contain their excitement about their trip to Canada next week!

For some students, this will be their first overnight experience without family.  Others are well-seasoned campers, used to weeks away from home.  Whatever your child’s background is, you can be assured that he or she will have the most wonderful educational adventure at camp.  The students always return with a little more maturity and sense of self-reliance.  The best approach you can take before this big trip is to reassure your child that the trip will be so exciting, it will leave little time to think about home.

A weekly assignment the fifth graders are completing is to follow the news.  Each Tuesday, the students are required to bring in a news article to share with the class.  The topics rotate around local, national, and world news.   The table groups rotate through these categories.  News articles are posted on the bulletin board for one week for students to read for more information.  We have already had fantastic discussions about our first week gathering news!

This week we began the month of September and started our first goal charts.  The students will complete a goal chart each month to stay focused on particular goals.  At the beginning of the month, they each write one school goal, one home goal, and one personal goal.  They will revisit the chart each day and grade their progress.  At the end of the month, the students reflect on the progress of their goals and decide if they need to continue with the same goals or write new ones.

The students received their first book report assignment on Monday.  It will be due on Friday, September 24.  Please encourage your child to keep up with reading the book and doing a little bit of the project each week.

Please remember the following important dates:

Sept. 11-12, St. Louis Art Fair
Sept. 18-19, Greentree Festival

Fifth Grade Curriculum

Fifth Grade equips students as they begin to become independent thinkers and learners. A wealth of organizational and study skills are modeled across the curriculum. Students are supported and carefully guided as they navigate their way to independence. With this increased sense of independence comes responsibility. Students prepare for middle school in their daily interactions with a team of teachers whose goals emphasize an increased level of academic and personal growth.

What makes a person of character? Students’ ongoing investigation of both non-fiction and fictional characters from our nation’s history helps them to reflect on the attributes that cause us to emulate others. An exploration of American history from colonial times and the Revolutionary War through the Civil War period creates the framework for the Social Studies curriculum and engaging historical fiction.

Oral and written communications are taught in tandem and prepare students to speak and write for a variety of audiences and using a number of genres.

In mathematics, solving realistic problems builds and strengthens critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Past concepts are revisited regularly to ensure long-term understanding. New, more sophisticated, concepts are related and tied to past concepts and experiences. Skills and confidence grow through engaging lessons and activities.
